Center for Service Learning Leadership (CSLL)

A professional development experience for independent school educators to engage with the foundation, praxis and practice of Service Learning.
Shorecrest Preparatory School's annual Service Week stands out as an example of our commitment to service: for 4-10 days in the spring all students and faculty of grades 9-12 commit to powerful, immersive service experiences in our local Tampa Bay area, nationally and internationally. Their Service Learning program and philosophy, and associated Service Week, can serve as a living, learning lab for other independent schools. Shorecrest is currently developing and expanding service learning programming across Pre-K-12, with particularly powerful programs in the middle school, where it is essential to engage students with real world problem solving through service learning as as strong foundation for upper school and beyond.

Do your students understand what it means to serve?

Now there is a professional development experience for independent school educators to engage with the foundation, praxis and practice of Service Learning.

Come spend a week in the tri-state area at the Dwight-Englewood School (located in Englewood, NJ, close to NYC) with colleagues and community partners dedicated to broadening your skills in civic engagement. Together we will learn the latest best-practices on engaging students through service learning.

During five days of teaching, learning, collaborating, site visits and planning, educators will be prepared to return to their campus with a concrete plan and strategy to implement Service Learning both in their classroom and throughout the school.

Each day will consist of some or all of the following components:
  • Essential questions for Service Learning
  • Readings and Reflections tied to the essential question
  • Group and Partner Discussions
  • Curriculum planning, critique and presentation
  • Guest Speakers from our service partners
  • Visits to service sites
Who Should Attend:
Independent school teachers looking to create, implement or perfect service learning projects and curricula.

Independent school service learning administrators, program directors and practicing faculty from across the trip state area (NY, NJ and Connecticut), the nation and the world. This institute is open to all independent school educators.

Administrators (Division heads, Heads of Schools, etc...) are also welcome and will have a slightly modified curriculum.

Enrollment is limited to the first 10 participants and is on a first come, first serve basis.

Fee: $800, not including housing or transportation. Lunch will be provided all five days (Monday - Friday).

Service News from CSLL

Visit an independent school website at random and search for “service.” Odds are that you will encounter a wide range of service experiences, from encouraging service with no numerical requirement for graduation, to Service Days, sometimes around the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. holiday or the beginning of semesters, and perhaps other impactful service events that tend to be the exception rather than a rule. The point is that service in independent schools is often treated as an extracurricular activity or a value that is tangentially addressed or developed “beyond” the classroom, or as an after school afterthought around charity or fundraising.
