The institute is built on four groundbreaking pillars to service learning within independent schools:
We believe that high-quality learning must go along with service, and community service and service-learning are fundamentally different.
To move beyond charity and create structural change, service must go along with learning experiences both inside and outside the classroom.
We believe that service learning within independent schools has important nuances that deserve attention, education and reflection.
This means we ask hard, difficult questions around privilege, power and access to become better community stewards and service partners.
We believe in learning from students, non-profits, clients and community partners as much as learning from research, theory and textbooks.
This means we take a holistic and humble approach to service learning work and we are reflective and proactive in pursuing best practices.
We believe that servant-leadership is critical to citizenship and it it can be taught through high-quality service learning praxis and practice.
Both the head and the heart are critical in shaping young people and faculty to teach and learn transformative and effective civic engagement.
